I don't know why but I just hate it. It's just a muddle of yelling and
not like the 1st and 3rd albums. It sometimes sounds like a mouse
being tortured. Did the band comment on how it's different from the
others?

They said it was the test of being a true fan. If you liked that album.
It has consistently won in polls as the favorite fan album.
I love it.

DNFTF is my second favorite album, and it contains my second favorite
Devo song, Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA. I'm *still* trying to figure out the
Minimoog patch for it. My husband came pretty close a couple times,
but neither of us can remember how he got there. :(

Maybe I should write Club Devo and beg for the patch? ;-)

Is that like oneof those patches that help you quit smoking but for
synth music?

LOL

No. . . it's more like instructions on how to set the knobs & switches
on a synth to achieve the desired sound.

i remember reading an interview with Mark somewhere and he talks about
the Minimoog he or Jerry owned and used before recording are we not men
and how much it differed from the mini they used at Eno's studio. It
could be related to the fact that the moog was just funky (it had
probably not been serviced in years and was probably used very
intensley) thus creating that sound I've never heard again. The only
flaw in my logic is that the synth on Smart Patrol sounds fucking
exactly the same live now as it did years ago.

"We had that problem in Germany, and also at your [Patrick
Gleeson] studio, using new Minimoogs. Our Mini is so beat
up that it always sounded distorted anyhow; and then we were
running it into Teac boards and tape recorders, which had
higher distortion levels. So when we recorded at your place
and in Germany, we were using brand new Minimoogs and
expensive boards and recorders, and it sounded like
'Switched-On Bach.' It was too clean."

Eno didn't produce DNFTF.

FWIW, the two Minis Mark uses now were made in 1974 and 1978.
IIRC, he uses the '74 one for the Smart Patrol patch.

i am aware of this and did not mean to come across as if i was
suggesting that he did. i was simply using it as a comparison to the
minimoog used on duty now. I assume that they used their own minimoog
seeing as how it was recorded in california and not in germany.

Ah, I see, and I agree with you. I'm pretty sure they had
one of the two Minis they're using now when DNFTF was
recorded.

One of the reasons I dig DNFTF so much is because the
Minimoog is all over that album. It's a nice mix with all
the gritty guitar sounds. :-)

You must not like DEVO, then. It's their best album.

Wow. I think "Blockhead" and "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" are Devo's best
songs. Overall, I think the album is great, but I'll grant you that
"Triumph of the Will" and "SIB" don't do anything for me.

The only thing I didn't like about Duty Now was the production. I
thought it was too dry and boxy sounding. The live versions of the
songs on that album blow away the studio production. But if you're
judging strictly on the material, I'd have to say that Duty Now has a
few songs that are the best they've ever done, but overall isn't as
quite as good as Q/A.

I like poppier music like the Cars, the Clash etc. Maybe that's why
Duty Now bugged me so much. I also thought the production was awful.
I love Freedom of Choice.

You don't have any right to tell me I don't like Devo.

Duty Now For The Future is great -- finds them stretching out as a
band, contains some of their best material, and is kind of an extension
of their early recordings, in a way -- very garagey-sounding record,
and the last thing they produced in Ohio before moving out to LA. It
wasn't slick, it wasn't dancey, it was pure underground twisted rock n
roll, and the last record that they could claim that for. I wish they'd
never "gone Hollywood", and kept making cool records like DNFTF & Q&A.

Hey, it was nuffink personal. So you like all DEVO except the
quintessential DUTY NOW. Fine.

The secret to getting this album is having seen the guys in their prime
performing this music (yes it really is music) as a live, brain jamming
act. In a packed theater this was as close to good sex as you can get
and still charge admission.

This is the first I've ever heard of Devo being compared to good sex.
I would say seeing Devo was like a really good whack session cut short
right before you blow a nut.

Never having had a nut to blow maybe I got something different out of
the whole experience than you did. I mean, they sure was some sexy
hunks of manlies at 35...fill suits out pretty good even now. And I
think maybe it'd be worrisome if most of the rest of you agreed - not
that I'm judging anybody.

i remember reading in an early DEVO interview, there was an album they
recorded where they got into physical confrontations with the engineer.
i'm not sure if it was DNFTF or FOC. of course, after the success of
"WHIP IT", all bets were off.

btw, RED EYE EXPRESS is totally underrated.

To me, it was and always be the "definitive Devo". It's still ten
years ahead of it's time. It's the sound of the future that just
seems eternally elusive... it's the Jetson's, but more pissed off.

It's my favourite DEVO album.

Devo fans who don't like that album a lot have
extremely different brain chemistry than me.
