This was my phonce conversation with the Project manager for the new
Audubon Bridge Design Build in Louisina.

me: I need some information on bridge #4. To properly layout the
girdger, I need the Horizontal curve data.

he: Just tell me what you need.

me: the horizontal curve data ofr brigde #4.

he: But what do you need!?

me: I cannot layout the girders unless I canlayout the baseline, I
can;t layout the baseline unless I have the horizontal curve data.

he: I got sheet 4012 here, now tell me what information on this you
need.

me: I have th sheet too, but the information I need is ot on it.

he: What information do you need?

me: The horizontal curve data. I cannot layout the baseline with the
information on sheet 4012. The information I need is on either 4009 or
4010. Theywere not included in the set I got from the FTP site.

he: but information do you need?I'm looking at sheet 4012. Tell me
what you need off it.

me: You see teh baseline of the bridge whch is also the propsed grade
line?

he: Hmmmm...... is thatb the lines with the number on it.

me: yes, those are the staions on the baseline. Now the line has two
bearing angles and a station for the PT, I need either the radius of
the curve or the deflection angle.

he: What does PT Stand for?

me: Point of Tangency, thats where the curve ends anad the tangent
section begins.

he: OK, so what do you need?

After 30 minutes......

me: ... and thats what the horizotal curve is and why I need the
information.

he: OK, I'll contact the engineers in New York.

Ahh the joys of the "design Build"! Where any kook off the street can
become a "Project manager!"

Some times I think I'm surrounded by Alcandor Clones.

Back when i was in the survey biz, we learned quickly that you NEVER ask a
question of a civil engineer, since it was probably one of his technicians
that did the actual work. PE's are there to put thier rubber stamp on a
project, and little else.

During the last week and a half, I have FIVE TIMES been in stores
where the proprietor informed me MOST CONFIDENTLY and QUICKLY that
they didn't have what I was looking for, only for me to then
immediately find that very thing sitting in plain sight. (They HATE
that!) In two cases the thing I wanted was there, but WOULDN'T SCAN,
so I was told it couldn't be sold to me, even though the price was
clearly marked on it.

something but I haven't even told them what it is yet.

I was in the Home of the Despot yesterday.(This would be a brand new
Super Despot at that)
I needed 150' of Cat5e.
Could not get someone to cut it to save my life. So I walked up and down
the aisle.
Hmmm 100' foot precut length for $33 dollahs. Really can't use that
though. (Mind, it is 27 centavos per foot if they cut it.)
Hmmm 1000' Box $69 dollahs. Was $85 dollahs. SOLD.

6.9 centavos per foot. Woohoo.

Had to wait 15 minutes for the cashier to get another flunky to confirm
that price. I was irritated at first, but soon realized that I was
making out pretty damn good on the deal. This was the rare case where
being inconvenienced was convenient.
