I stopped in at a local (Austin) club last night and my friend Holy
Charlie was there - he told me to pop across the street to Beerland in
a few minutes to see him and his new roommate SPOT do an acoustic set
of cover tunes.

Now, for you hardcore fans, SPOT is the dude who produced most every
essential US punk rock album - he's also a multi-instrumentalist beyond
compare with insanely eclectic tastes.

Anyhow, among other gems, the pair did two DEVO tunes; first "Gut
Feeling" on acoustic & electric guitar, and then for the big finale
they did both "My Baby Gave Me a Surprize" and Tubeway Army/Gary
Numan's "Are Friends Electric" with SPOT on banjo, and both songs
sounded like they would've worked just fine to rally the troops during
the Civil War. GREAT renditions!

Sorry you weren't there! I haven't seen DEVO live since the OH NO tour
or thereabouts, so I guess we're even.

I think Spot produced and engineered Hüsker Dü's first 4 records
(excluding the live noise-blur that was Land Speed Record): Everything
Falls Apart, Metal Circus, Zen Arcade, and New Day Rising. I've always
thought that Zen Arcade, aside from being such an AMAZING double-LP, is
an unbelievably important and influential release of post-punk indie
rock, affecting a lot of bands that came along later. What's with this
Spot guy though? What's his real name and what's his story? I don't
know anything about him at all.

- JonYo, going off to listen to all 13+ noisy minutes of Reoccurring
Dreams now...

Ahhhh! Now THERE'S a mystery! Nobody knows his real name, but rumor has
it that in his youth he grew up among the great Motown stars and was
being groomed by his rich family to be a big record producer -
supposedly he's even credited under his real name on some Motown discs.
He rejected all that, though, and hit the punk scene hard, and he's
never looked back.

That's the way I always heard it.
