Does anyone else read this group through Google? Ever notice the
description they use: "Funny hats do not a band make"?

I can't decide if they mean it as a compliment or a put-down. Any
opinions?

I suppose one could argue that the statement means that no matter what
costumes a band wears (or the props they use, or the visuals they
produce), their real talent lies in their ability to create and
perform--the ability to operate as a cohesive unit and make something
that people want to hear. The 'funny hats' are just icing on the cake.
On the other side of the coin is the fact that some bands may (and
alot of them do) rely on the bizarre or outlandish to draw attention to
themselves. Most of these bands don't have any real talent, in my
opinion--DEVO being an exception, of course. DEVO perfectly melded
their singing/writing talents with a unique sense of art and fashion to
create a new experience in the music industry that has had far-reaching
effects ever since they emerged in the 70's...and still does!
So, is the statement an insult or a compliment? The answer may not be
satisfactory, but I believe it can be taken either way. In my view,
it's very complimentary, but it is kinda cryptic when you really look
at it.
