Take a look around the ol' 'tube if you wanna check out a rarely-seen
5+ minute long 1982 interview with Mark Mothersbaugh during the heart
of the NuTraMan Tour. I'm in the process of uploading it as I type
this, so unless something goes awry it'll be available for viewing any
minute now.
The interview was conducted by a totally brain-dead bimbo from the
Showtime cable channel for a feature on the Church of the SubGenius,
and was shot immediately upon the band's release from a Houston jail,
where they had been taunted and abused throughout the previous night.
Needless to say, MM was in a foul mood, but nonetheless he tried his
damnedest to avoid saying the words "f*ck" and "p*ssy" in the company
of the clueless tele-twit.
The look of disbelief on MM's face as she continues to blindly drag
him deeper and deeper into embarrassingly graphic sexual repartee is
guaranteed to provoke gales of laughter. The raw footage from the
interview was apparently reclaimed by the Church at some point and was
chopped into a number of brief snippets for use in "The SubGenius
Bootleg Video", which was a sort of demo/prototype for the Church's
epic "Arise!" feature film)
The footage was shot during a SubGenius function in Dallas, and the
focus of the chat with MM is on the New Traditionalist Man and the
life-changing power of "BOB" and "slack". After years of intention
without action, I've finally forced myself to reassemble MM's words
and post them online in honor of Devo's upcoming showcase at Austin's
SXSW 2009 music & media festival. The title I chose for the YouTube
posting is "DEVO: The Pros & Cons of Texas '82". (Iif that doesn't
turn it up, try a search using the keywords "devo", "subgenius" and
"houston").
Hopefully, this time DEVO's time in Texas will be less fraught with
trauma and misery at the hands of The Conspiracy than their 1982 visit
was!
