Poll question, I guess. As Devo fans, you guys understand what I mean
-- anti -consumerist, "don'tcha-follow leaders and watch yer parkin'
meters" kinda bands who are truly inheritors of the attitude, and to
heck with the style -- who do you think, among newer bands, qualifies
as truly rock 'n' roll?

Nobody. In the old days, rock and roll was genuine. Sure, there was
corporate crap, but you could always count on bands to come out of
nowhere now and then and just rewrite the book. Nowadays all the
bands actually WANT to be corporate whores.

Yeah -- I had found the lyrics to "I'm A Potato" online and was showing
them to a co-worker. We were both kinda saying "they don't write 'em
like that anymore" so I kinda thought I'd double check... No sense of
humor, nobody out there willing to venture an opinion in song that
isn't legitimized in the media.

I got work to do...

POLYSICS - The New, Japanese DEVO. Seriously, they rock my socks off.

Also worth checking out:
Capillary Action (http://www.capillaryaction.net)
Ex Models (http://www.exmodels.org)
The Darkness (okay, I kid.)

I'll second that. I bought the "Polysics Or Die" CD. It kicks ass.
Sure, the songs aren't *ALL* perfect, but the attitude is there- all
the rawness and energy of early Devo.

I gotta give the edge to the Plastics' third album "Welcome Back"...
It's a brilliant re-think of songs off their first two albums.
Obviously a band that "got it".

(I haven't heard PONG's newest CD yet, but as of their last one, they
were rockin' - and certainly the most DEVO band in Texas if not the
world.

listening, but I did like Plaster Caster

Two Watts of Power.

Comprised entirely of members of this ng, who have never met, or even
actually spoken to each other. Now that's rock 'n' roll!

Yep. We rountinely twist each other's ideas into truly scary
abominations- crimes against man and nature. If that ain't rock n'
roll, I'll eat a bug.

You're thinking of Zardoz. I took my name from "Zontar; Thing From
Venus", a movie from the same man who gave us "Mars Needs Women", Larry
Buchanan .

Now that's rock 'n' roll!
Rock OR roll, technically. Producing both simultaneously using our
methods would violate the Gavina convention.

Porter: "It's the number 1 doctor recommended brand for the treatment
of "self rising" deflictions".
Dolly: "Cat's don't folly me 'round the neighborhood no more, Porter!
And there's a free
towel in the box! A really tiny free towel!"
Porter: "...now here's Johnny Cash."

In grade school, the wisest among us joked about having a
"hart-on for Part-on". Didn't understand it then, still don't

Those free towels sucked, but the way, and they actually cut
manufacturing costs by displacing valuable detergent

Coincidantally enough, I just got an email from a local (Austin Texas)
band announcing that they have just changed their name to... General
Boy!

I dunno if they rawk, nor how DEVO they be, but it certainly seemed
worth mentioning here. They've got www.generalboy.com staked out, but
there's practically nothing there so far...

Their music is here:
http://www.oober.com/pages/generalboy.htm

The stuff is very distantly early DEVO-y, mostly in the guitar parts.
Maybe 7% DEVO in places. Not horrible, just not worth saving to the HD
or anything. The songs eschew DEVO brevity, going on for 4+ minutes.
Probably the least non-DEVO Generous Boy track online is this:
