What bands did Devo admire when they were first starting? I wonder if
they liked Kraftwerk. I always liked Kraftwerk, they are like Devo
without the anxiety. :-) Obviously they liked Bowie and Eno, or at
least their music.

Do you have a list of covers of Devo songs by fairly well-known people?
The obvious one is Nirvana doing turnaround.

Well, obvious stuff like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones.
Plus: Roxy Music, Morton Subotnick, John Cage, Captain Beefheart, all kinds
of blues music, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Yardbirds, TV commercial
jingles, elevator music, The Residents, lots of 50's & 60's pop music &
garage bands, avant garde classical, Wendy/Walter Carlos. Lots of other
stuff.

I'd just look online. Soundgarden & Superchunk both did Girl U Want, and
Rage Against The Machine did Beautiful World. They Might Be Giants just did
a Devo cover.

Excellent list. I would specifically add:
Hawkwind / Faust & Raymond Scott / Carl Stalling as two very different
categories of influence.

Toni Basil did "Be Stiff", "Space Girl Blues", and "You Really Got A
Problem" (M. Mothersbaugh composition), but those are also *backed* by
Devo, so I don't know that they count as covers ...

Fu Manchu did Freedom of Choice. And got the words wrong, just like
everyone else who covers it.

Yeah! I don't have that album in front of me right now,but she covered
some other DEVO stuff too. Did DEVO produce and play on it? I forget.
Wasn't she hooked up with Casale back then? No time to dig through my
DEVO archive to check...

Somewhere I got a bunch of very odd DEVO covers by unlikely bands, but I
don't have that hard drive plugged in right now.

there was an album of covers, done by a band made up of devo fans called
the DEVO-TEES, that was put out by KROQ. probably a collectable...

From the back of the DEVOTEES album:

"This LP was compiled from tapes sent in by KROQ listeners during the
summers of 1978 and 79. KROQ, Rhino Records and DEVO would like to
thank all the mutants who entered the DEVOTEES contest"

So, several bands of DEVO fans.

Unless that's a different album.

Ah yes, I long had a cassette made from the vinyl, then I was lucky
enough to snag it as MP3s from the late, lamented GAMERAWEB. JOCKO BOZO
is the snots, man.

Hey, he said "fairly well-known".
Besides, Jerry had to bang her to get her to record it.

Stiff Records did a whole LP of various bands covering Be Stiff.

Left Orbit Temple does a cool version of Beautiful World.

I had a Moby 45 with a truly scary take on Whip It for the B-side.

The acts on that private Be Stiff comp included Elvis Costello, didn't
it? Those are the most high-profile names that come to mind, though
we've all got to be overlooking something obvious...

Don't forget Soundgarden's cover of "Girl U Want". I know Devo (esp.
Jerry) didn't really like it, but I do.

Also, wasn't there a tribute album a few years ago called "We Are Not
Devo"?
