I've read about this music for years - mostly how bad and dumb it is.
The masks are cool. I never look at MTV so I never saw them actually
moving around.

Curiosity demanded I eventually grab some of this music and give it a
listen. So, I did that.

It has big ragged slabs of early DEVO and PRIMUS around the edges.

Normally I dislike this "Cookie Monster screaming at you" music, but
some of Slipnutz sounds pretty good, if you overlook the redneck
self-pity and unfocused hostility - "I was doomed to have been born in
Iowa, so fuck and shit and stuff".

I say: Check it out, or not.

Oh sure, Slipknot is OK, but not nearly as good as the Slipnutz, who
Slipknot is often mistaken for. I see you've even used their names
interchangeably. So just for the record...Slipknot: comedy rock.
Slipnutz: just plain comedy.

GWAR is the best of the non-DEVO masked bands, though. Their music
ain't so hot always, but the act makes up for that.

They got a new Slymenstra, now, at least sometimes. This one is younger
and less sloppy. A bunch of the other characters have been replaced
with youngsters, too.

PHALLUS IN WONDERLAND is one of the greatest rock video adventures ever.

Nope, The Residents are. There was an interview with Devo where they said
that if they had stayed in Ohio, they would have become the midwest version
of The Residents.

How the fo-huck did I forget about the Residents? They're one of my top
thousands of faves. Yeah.

Corrected relative rankings:
1. The Residents
2. The GWAR

Someday I am going to put rubber Halloween eyeballs on top of GI JOEs or
Ken dolls in tuxedos and call them my Residents action figures set. I
have been intending to do that for twenty-five years.

I recently met up with a friend from New Orleans who I haven't seen in
years. He INSISTED on playing 3 whole Slipknot CDs for me.

The CD with "Duality" on it is very good (IMHO). It has some great
guitar work, and the vocals go from whispers to screams in interesting
ways. I agree with you about the "cookie monster" thing, and they
seemed to have found a way around this cliche - on this particular
album. But the first 2 CDs were hard to get through (for me anyway).

What do you think of System Of A Down? They do the "Nu-Metal" thing
very well, and mix in a lot of progressive and mid-eastern influences.

What I've heard, I've liked, and I saw some nifty weird-ass videos by
them (I think by them) a while back. One had an alien-looking kid
wandering around and stuff.

I actually have so many albums to hear and movies to watch stacked up
around here, I'm years behind. I suppose it's insurance against when
all non-commerce internet gets shut down. I gots my entertainment
banked, man. It's all planned! When electricity goes away, I will
watch TV by candlelight.

Meanwhile, the newest cool TV theme song: ROBOT CHICKEN by Les Claypool.
