Looks like Mark and Jerry have put on a lot of weight since I saw the
band in 2004 (then again, so have I). Those $50,000-per-night fees must
agree with them. Mark looks like the girl in Willy Wonka who swallowed
a blueberry (or in this case a lemon).

I think the weight gain started when they stopped touring in the early
1990's. The money Mark makes at these shows is laughable compared to his
Hollywood composer paycheck. Mutato makes more money than Devo ever did.

I figure Mark's film-composing career is pretty lucrative but still, if
he takes home roughly $10,000 for every Devo show then he's certainly
adding to his comfort level (and more power to him). I remember being
shocked by some of the weight gain when I saw Devo photos in the late
1990s. But this clip was a fresh shock. Don't mean to rag on them about
it--it actually worries me slightly though I know it's not my concern.

I wonder if Mark and Jerry take more than everyone else. I'm sure
they're not paying Josh even close to what they make, but I wonder if
the Bobs get less.

I'd be surprised if the Bobs would accept partial pay considering their
"essentialness" (and would Mark and Gerry do business with their bros
like that?). My imaginary breakdown was 10K for each "real" member, 5K
for the drummer and 5K for miscellaneous expenses, but I don't know
anything about the real economics.

Unless Devo are the most generous people in the business, I seriously
doubt if Josh makes 5 grand a show. I was guessing around $1000.
Which is still great pay. But I know a lot of these older acts pay
horribly.

But Josh is a well-employed drummer for hire who's played for bands
that do bigger shows than Devo. Maybe there's a scale: Josh F: $2,500;
David K: $1,500; anonymous drummer-for-hire, $1,000

Trust me. Very few famous people pay well. I know a guy who played
drums with Faith Hill and made $400 a night. And though Josh is quite
in demand, it's no guarantee that he made big money with A Perfect
Circle. Maynard was the star and leader of that band, and probably
dictated what the rest of the band made.

Again, let's reiterate here that I am only spitballing about what
these guys are making, but the evidence points to them making much
less than an equal split.
