I saw an ad for a Sonic Youth show in the Village Voice, they were
using the tape and crossbones pic in the ad, which got me
wondering....

did devo create that image?

It originated in the early 80's and was the Recording Industry
Association's logo for "Home Taping is Killing Music."

Of course, as we all know, home taping continued, and music died.

Why would DEVO (mis)use a graphic so intimately associated with Rod's
Big Reamer? In the context of Time Out For Fun, it had a slightly
different meaning. Those interested can read "The Job" by William S.
Burroughs, "InfoPsychology" by Tim Leary, "Prometheus Rising" by Bob
Wilson, and "Undoing Yourself" by Christopher Hyatt.

Failing that try "the Book of The Subgenius" by Ivan Stang

I saw some spuds with the tape and crossbones logo on their shirts at
the Central Park show, looked cool. Probably homemade. I would attempt
to make one myself maybe.
