Years ago I heard that tune by Nirvana and discovered it was a cover of
Devo. But where did Cobain hear it from, since it's not on any of their
albums? The only place I have found it is on the import CD of New
Trad/Duty Now.

My memory is both petrified and pickled, but the scattered voices in my
head say I first heard that song on a 7" 45rpm record, possibly a
B-side. I have a cassette of that song with vinyl record pops'n'clicks.

Yup, the B-side of "Whip It".

Has this tune been on any CD *other* than the Virgin import 2-fer? Why
wasn't it inlcuded on any of the IZ remasters, Pioneers Who Got Scalped,
or Recombo DNA????

Must have hallucinated it. I could have sworn I saw it listed on the back
when I saw those in the record store last decade.

There's a demo version on Recombo DNA.
But that's it.

My Dad found the "Whip It" single for me at a thrift store in 1988. It
wasn't until I got FOC awhile later (the same way, I think) did I
realize it was only a B-side.

Nirvana's version is okay. I didn't like the way Kurt mangled the
lyrics. He changed my favorite line in the song, and something I make
it a point to do because of the song... "you go for that corner seat in
the restaurant."

I also *love* the keyboard in it. :-)

For the same reason that Luv Luv, the extended version of Speed Racer,
the non-extended version of Doctor Detroit, and many others (like My
Home Town, or the early Martini Ranch EP) were left off. At least
that's my best guess... There's certainly enough for another CD!

Martini Ranch wasn't Devo.

Luv-Luv is probably my least favorite Devo song ever. Apparently it's
theirs, too.

Speed Racer extended version, huh? Never heard of one...frankly, I'm
glad I didn't. I never cared for that tune. Where did it appear
originally?

Doctor Detroit single...this made me mad enough to make my own short
version by editing down the long version from Pioneers. Sounds
identical to the single if you ask me. I sent it to Devo, who were
amazed that I could do it because they were two separately recorded
versions, but I never heard back from them about it.

What is My Home Town? Can't say I ever heard of it.

Devo has probably 4 or 5 albums of unreleased tunes left that they
could release. Fortunately, it's just about all available as
bootlegs.

The EP was Devo playing and Martini Ranch singing. If you can put
Toni Basil singing "The Only One" on a Devo CD, then you can put the
Martini Ranch EP on one, too.

I ripped my pristine single and made an excellent mp3 of it. Ask me

However, I restricted my list to songs that saw vinyl as an actual
release at one time.

Duty now!

Yup, that's the one. It's an elusive little CD as it's been years
since I started looking for it and I still can't get my hands on one!

Yes, I did. But I'll still hand it out to anyone who doesn't have it,
can't find it, and wants it all the same because The Men Who Make The
Music don't seem to be able to fertilize us spuds with it at the
moment.
