Chicken truck burns on Del. 1 near Biddles Corner

09/19/2005Motorists on Del. 1 near Biddles Corner got a bizarre view
this morning as a front-end loader scooped heaps of frozen chickens
from a burned truck.
Frederick Durham of Aberdeen, Md., was hauling a trailer full of whole
frozen chickens from a Purdue plant in Georgetown, heading north on
Del. 1 about 6:25 a.m. near Biddles Corner when the incident occurred,
said Delaware State Police spokesman Lt. Joseph P. Aviola Jr.
Durham had just driven past Pole Bridge Road when he heard a tire blow
out. He slowed the rig and pulled over onto the right shoulder, Aviola
said.
When Durham got out of the cab of the 2003 Great Dane rig, he saw the
trailer section was engulfed in flames, Aviola said.
Durham managed to separate the cab from the rig and pulled away several
hundred feet from the burning load, saving that part of the 18-wheeler,
he said. Durham was not hurt.
Arriving firefighters used chemical foam to put out the burning
trailer, but the truck's structure was too damaged by the blaze to be
towed from the scene, Aviola said.
As traffic crept by in the one northbound lane that remained open,
front-end loaders took scoop after scoop of whole frozen chickens from
the trailer and unloaded them into dump trucks, Aviola said. None of
the load could be salvaged, he said.
The remains of the trailer were later removed, he said.
The northbound lane nearest the fire site remained closed for more than
nine hours, backing up traffic on Del. 1.
