Discussion:
Devo 2.0 kid was in Monk

Kane Richotte was an actor in Monk and is now the drummer in Dev2.0.
Has he talked about being in Monk?

He played the son of Sharona Fleming, played by Bitty Schram, who
abruptly left Monk causing a huge uproar among fans. But the show is
still good. It's a funny and sometimes poignant show about a detective
who has some real problems.

The Devo page said the kids in 2.0 are 10-12 years old but I think Kane
is older than that.

Kane Richotte was born on 11 October 1991, which makes him 14. He was
in 15 episodes of "Monk."

Devo 2.0 is one of a number of Disney-run cookie-cutter boy-band
groups. This particular one does covers of old Devo songs.

Why does this not surprise me. Did Bambi need a sequel? Did Devon need a
sequel?

I'll let everyone take that in whatever way they'd like.

The idea of a sequel to "Bambi" is, in itself, appalling. The ending
of the original is perfect, perfect, perfect -- the cycle of life, the
affirmation of love, the notion that life goes on. I first saw "Bambi"
when I was three years old, and I still remember crying hopelessly into
my mother's grey winter coat when Bambi's mother died. That was a
looooong time ago.

I realize that Disney has fooled with sequels and spinoffs for most of
its existence -- for example, the character "Scamp" was the son of Lady
and the Tramp -- but "Bambi" should have been untouchable.

I have no strong opinion about Devo. I once dated a woman whose
11-yr-old daughter wore one of those flowerpots on her head in
emulation of Devo. She was a nice kid, so -- as far as that goes --
Devo is okay with me.

I agree totally. It's as stupid as say, adding/fixing scenes in Star Wars
(ep. 4) [cue losts of posts]

But really, Bambi should be left alone. It's crass commercialism at its
finest.

Agreed

Devo is OK. Devo 2.0 is not OK. How about not being lazy and coming up with
something creative, rather than relying on plagiarism (sounds like some of
our qualms about Monk, doesn't it!). Now, maybe some of the kids are
children of original Devo members, so that I could buy, but even then, we
don't really need a Rolling Stones 2, Beatles 2, Michael Jackson 2
(shudder), etc.

As is typical, usually when things are "new and improved", they bear no
resemblance to what they've been improved from except in name. Now, where'd
I put that New Coke.

Well, to many 20 year olds they're brand new (though there are the ever
present TV commercials slightly resembling the original tune).

Would she have loved it if the original members of DEVO were playing it
though? If she saw a bunch of old people playing it, she might not have been
as interested? No, wait, you said 8, not 13! Oh well, gotta be a marketing
schem in there somewhere.

That's right. It is. It's their material and they were involved in the whole
project. They have talked for years about starting a new version of Devo.
This is Devo, the band that released muzak versions of their own songs. They
did it to themselves.

Probably not. Devo are old guys now.

I, for one, prefer Mr. Hankey's "Circle of Poo". I'm man enough to
admit that still cry when I watch that South Park episode in reruns.

On a side note, as a Devo fan, I wonder how Disney is getting around
the fact that Devo's biggest hit (Whip It, obviously) was about jacking
off? IIRC, Dev2.0 covers that song on the record. Devo actually did a
LOT of double-entendre, or just plain not-for-kids material. I mean,
it's one thing for a kid to be listening to it... but for 12 year old
kids to be performing that stuff? That's a little weird.

Anyways, I love Devo... the idea of Dev2.0 offended me a little... but
Mark Mothersbaugh has his fingers in a lot of stuff now (Rugrats, for
instance)... maybe this is just another part of his plan to conquer the
Earth. LOL.

No matter how I read these lyrics -- and I'm the first one to find smut
in anything -- I just don't see any references to masturbation here:

Crack that whip
Give the past the slip
Step on a crack
Break your momma's back

When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sits out too long
You must whip it
When something's going wrong
You must whip it

now whip it
into shape
shape it up
get straight
go forward
move ahead
try to detect it
it's not too late
to whip it
whip it good

When a good time turns around
You must whip it
You will never live it down
Unless you whip it
No one gets their way
Until they whip it

I say whip it
Whip it good

And they "endeavor to persevere" just like Devo admonishes all the

Yeah, but the song "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors was about jacking
off. Or at least the title is slang for it.

My friend lived in LA in 1980 and he said that at parties they
constantly played "Whip It" and "Turning Japanese" back-to-back.

Nope. The song is about overcoming obstacles or "whipping" them.
Cream is mentioned because it's merely something else that is whipped.
It's like the answer to a Family Feud question.
"Name things that are whipped".

Here are the facts on "Whip It":

Care to provide some insight/quotes/etc. to support your theory (or

Anyways, whatever, maybe it's not. Either way, there are a bunch of

IMO, DEVO was never that subtle with sexual references.
Not a criticism, just an observation.

Ahh, modern society.

Whatever happend to double-entendre - now whip it would be called stoke your
