Hey, I predicted this back at the time of "Pioneers Who Got Scalped"!
As my quote on the Club Devo site reads, "...damned if 'Pioneers'
doesn't make you wonder if there's not another great album left in
them before they return to the primordial ooze."

Isn't it quisnt how DEVO has distinctly geared their live shows
towards the early, guitar-dominated pre-"Freedom of Choice" sound, yet
their recordings of late have gone in precisely the opposite direction
with dense keyboards and powerful dance beats? Do y'all think that the
latter is what we should expect from the new album?

For that matter, I wonder if this'll be all really "new" or if it'll
include any or all of the album+ worth of semi-recent tracks
(completed between 1995-the present) already scattered around among
various soundtracks, side projects and compilation CDs out there (this
is likely an incomplete list, as it's mostly compiled from memory):

Supercop **
Head Like a Hole (T. Reznor) ****
Faster and Faster **
One Dumb Thing ***
+Army Girls Gone Wild ****
+The Owl ***
OHIO (N. Young) *****
Modern Life **
Are You Ready? *****
Go Monkey Go *****
Huboon Stomp *****
#Cyclops ***
#The Winner **
^Twist 'N' Launch ***
^Loona Goona Park **
it Doesn't Matter To Me ****
Witch Doctor (D. Seville) *
Communication Breakup ***
Thanks To You ***
%It's All Good ****
Girl U Want (slow version) **
Watch us Work It *****

NOTE: Above ratings from 1 to 5 stars are purely my own opinion.

+ = Jihad Jerry
# = DEV2.0
^ = WipeOuters
% = Big Dirty Farmers

We'll see. Jerry's album was pretty good. Not great but good.

I hope not. Part of the charm of the early stuff is that they didn't
sequence and they used cheap crap. I like a few songs from the more
sequenced dance stuff, but it definitely lost a lot of charm if you
ask me.

Boy do I hope they don't do this! Most of those songs were
throwaways, and they're already available to anyone who wants them.

The new album will be new material and not a collection of already released
odd tracks.

I assumed that, actually -- with the exception of "Watch Us Work It".
They would be foolish to NOT include that on the new CD since it's new
and they've gotten "free publicity" for it already.

Any ideas as to whether the album will consist predominantly of
guitars + odd time signatures or synths + sequencers?

The word is that the new songs sound like middle period Devo.
In other words, not like the first two records, and not like the last two.

Persoanly, I like "NewTra" as the most blatent "Subgenius" LP they
ever did.

I'm not getting very enthused if that's the case. OK, I liked some of
the songs they did back then, but I definitely like de-evolving guitar
sounds rather than using $10,000 keyboards.

It's highly unlikely it will be either one or the other, but in any case
Gary's news is great IMO. I think FoC and NT were two of their
best albums.

As someone who wore a yellow suit for Halloween a year ago and almost
passed out after an hour, I don't blame Devo for wanting to ditch
them. But damn, those outfits are godawful.

They played all three of these last night in Dallas. I really like
"What We Do", the other two I can take or leave. (Incidentally, the
show was great while it lasted, but I had hoped for more than a 100-
minute set for $40 plus Ticketbastard fees). Frankly, I'd love to see
all the soundtrack toss-offs collected in one place; most of them are
hardly high art, but I would be happy to have them if they were all
together instead of one track per album full of other less interesting
stuff.

...jesus, has it really been 12 years since I posted here last? Wow.

They did a 100-minute set and you're complaining? Most headline acts
do 90 minutes. And Devo is well-known for doing 60 or 70 minutes over
the past few years.

BTW, most of their toss-offs are available on "Pioneers Who Got
Scalped," the 2-disc best-of set they released a few years ago.

I've been spoiled, I admit it, and didn't realize they had done such
short sets in the past. I've been lucky, I guess, to have gotten 2+
hour sets most of the time I've gone to shows (this was my first Devo
show ever). It's a matter of warped expectations, is all.

And I've got Pioneers, actually. (In fact, I'm pretty sure I have
every album or comp *except* Freedom of Choice.)

New Devo song:
"Don't shoot, I'm a man"

Lyrics:
I get up every day / It's a miracle, I'm told / Somehow I live to work / So
I hit the road / Squeeze into my hybrid car / Drive as fast as I can / I
scan the rooftops, yeah I scan the rooftops / Don't shoot, I'm a man

Here it is live:

I actually kind of liked that song. The "Don't Shoot, I'm a Man"
dickies were a nice touch. But this clip of Jocko Homo is the best:

Note the new touch they threw in the middle of the breakdown section.

BTW, all the reports I heard from the NIN camp said Josh Freese left
because his wife is having another baby. I think Josh left because
Devo lured him away with money. I'm sure the easier schedule didn't
hurt, but it looks like Devo is going to make a serious push with this
new album and do a serious tour. Looks like they've revamped their
whole show for it. Maybe they'll actually come to Florida again.

The reason why Devo is doing the new album and tour now are because Josh
Freese is with them full time.

Maybe they'll stop referring to him as the honorary Devo drummer, then
;)
