OK, we've come to the conclusion already that anything issued on
Warner Bros. and Virgin is inferior to their Infinite Zero and Rhino
counterparts, but how do the new reissues by Collectables stack up
against the Rhino and IZ remasters?
Pretty darn well. In fact, I would say identical to my ears. Loading
up sample tracks in Sound Forge showed the IZ having a slightly louder
spectrograph than the Collectables versions, but I couldn't tell the
difference between the two versions just listening with my eyes
closed.
I think the Collectables reissues could have been a lot less chintzy
with packaging and bonus tracks. None of these reissues have bonus
tracks at all, and there are no lyric sheets and extra pictures from
the LP releases. But if you don't have these on CD already, it's
really your only option, as the Virgin reissues absolutely suck. At
least the Collectables reissues have the good sounding masters.
